Positive & Negative Impacts of Catastrophic Events
Catastrophic Events caused by nature such as tornadoes or droughts effect the ecosystem greatly. These events impact the ecosystem both positively and negatively.
Floods for example impacts areas positively because of the large quantity of water the plants receive and the animals reproduce more, but water-based habitats are at risk because of the fertilizer among others in the runoff. This could cause many organisms to die.
Hurricanes impact the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Sediment erosion and deposition affects the marine life and the intrusion of salt water into freshwater causes many organisms to die. The good news is that many organisms that are effected by the hurricane rebound quickly. The organisms rebounded within three years of the storm.
Tornadoes affect vegetation and organisms. Vegetation is uprooted during a tornado and organisms that live in trees that are uprooted need to relocate and this could effect the interaction between plants and animals, but plants that survive can grow more abundantly than other species and the loss of plants can allow new species to grow.
